I am loving this commercial March 27, 2007

I have only seen it a few times, but I think it is so adorable. So I felt compelled to share the commercial and my opinion with the world! Plus I have a Toyota and I love it.

Enjoy!

Anna Nicole No More March 22, 2007

Filed under: TV — mmmchocoloate @ 3:16 pm

I am so sick of the constant media coverage of Anna Nicole’s ‘mystery death’. There are all these hold ups and prolonged investigations… that I am really starting to think is just for mass media.

Dr. Phil is having a show on Anna Nicole today and his ‘experts’ are ET and Insider hosts. Come on! He is asking about the investigation to people who are playing it up for ratings every day. Furthermore, as I watched the first few minutes I actually became outraged. This is so ridiculous, someone died and that is awful… just leave it alone.

Now they are analyzing what she was thinking and who the father might have been… but really who’s business is it?

Dr. Phil was criticizing her mother at the funeral for shovelling 52 piles of dirt on the grave… Are you kidding? Why does this matter. It doesn’t. I thought Dr. Phil was supposed to help people with relationships… not solve murder mysteries!

Reading to much into things… March 19, 2007

Did anyone read those articles about Friends and Smallville? Although I do see the merrit in analyzing things I feel that those ‘investigations’ into the homosexual relationships on Friends and Smallville is more like taking an idea and reading into something to make it support your idea.

These shows are just superficial comedy and drama television, not carrying deep underlying meaning. I mean Joey and Chandler are gay? Sure the show played with connotations of homosexuality for humor, but I don’t think we should read too deeply into these things.

Although there may be some interesting ideas, I have to say Friends is just a comedy and that is about all the ‘deep interpretation’ I can give it.

Go Dove. March 11, 2007

I have to note that the Dove Real Beauty ads are a marketing campaign that I actually think are doing some good. They are using real people to represent their products and making real people feel a little better about themselves. They are not setting these unattainable standards with size 4 models airbrushed to be size 2. Go Dove.

I think this is the direction more advertisers need to move towards if we want to start teaching girls that they are beautiful just the way they are and boys need to see that this is what real girls look like. Those gals in Maxim don’t exist anywhere else except on those magazine pages.

Here’s an example of a Dove commercial revealing the truth about advertising:

One more…

PS: When I was at the store, this is the first time I purchased a product solely because of its advertising. Between Dove and all those others – I chose Dove.

America’s Next Top Model – it’s not about how you look! March 7, 2007

Filed under: TV — mmmchocoloate @ 10:36 pm

“It’s not just about pretty… it’s about more than that!” (Come on Tyra, who are you kidding?) This was the most ridiculous thing I have heard all year. This is a show about picking the skinniest, tallest, prettiest and most photogenic girl to be the ‘next top model’. The whole show is about how you look – it doesn’t really matter what kind of personality you have or how smart you are. All that matters is your size and smile…

Miss Tyra Banks your show does not focus on anything but looks. You critique these girls on lip pouting and posing for pictures. It is all about pretty.

Absolutely RIDICULOUS!

I watched a few clips on youtube and here is a taste of what I heard:

“Your jaw is too big”
“More neck”
“Your face is almost there”
“You didn’t do much with your face”
“I wish she was a bit taller”
“There are two plus size girls in this competition”

Nuff said.

Are you smarter than a 5th grader… February 28, 2007

Wow! Did anyone see this show last night. It makes absolute fools of the contestants and a mockery of the American educational system. This show has five ten year olds who answer the questions that their adult contestants can’t. I was upset that I wasted fifteen minutes watching this television show. So don’t spend your time watching the show, do something a little more intelligent like read a book.

Anyone know how she actually died yet? February 23, 2007

Filed under: TV — mmmchocoloate @ 9:22 pm

Anna Nicole Smith… it’s a media mystery. Even if you live under a rock I know by now you have heard that Anna Nicole has died and the paternity of her baby is in question… IT’s ALL OVER THE MEDIA, every third channel has images of the blonde or her baby…

BUT WHAT concerns me more than the media’s extreme sensationalism over the unfortunate death of an individual and a motherless child is that they are drawing it out for the single purpose of ratings.

It is absolutely disgusting that the courts and media have allowed this private, horrible event to be splashed and manipulated into a “hollywood mystery” for the benefit of ratings… Why haven’t they released the cause of death or the paternity of her child? Are they unable to figure it out or are they drawing it out for entertainment???

People relish gossip and the Anna Nicole death/paternity debate are all over the media not because it’s news, but because it’s an attention grabber.

Reality vs. real life… February 9, 2007

Filed under: TV — mmmchocoloate @ 6:15 pm

Are our social lives real? or just mediated by media? Here’s my problem, there are a group of friends who have a Grey’s party every thursday around 9:00 pm. We get together at someone’s house, bring snacks and call it a party. But we don’t really even talk, except on commercials, but 99% of the time we are talking about the show…

This thought just occured to me last sociology class, that perhaps the “social life” is not really real, but programmed by the TV and celebrities on it. Paul gave the example of Paris, we talk about Paris, not real issues. I go to a “TV show party” not a real party, where people talk and socialize and meet new people.

Are we forgetting what is real and what is TV? Seriously, how many of you have every seen someone the next day, or called someone to talk about what just happened to the character on some TV show? I admit it I’ve done it, but never really thought about it until now how much I get into these TV shows but really they are not real people, they are actors with lines and stylists!

Perhaps it is because our lives aren’t as interesting as the characters on TV? BUT perhaps they aren’t as interesting because we are sitting at home watching TV!

I’ve got bunny ears & I’m proud of it. February 2, 2007

I grew up on bunny ears and I still have them. Well my dad was right I watch enough television on 4 channels… Seriously, I can’t even imagine having cable, there are only 24 hours in a day, why spend so much time staring at the TV?

The textbook said kids watch about 900 hours of television a year. No wonder our generations are identified by the TV shows we watched as kids. I am a Fraggle Rock, Alf and Popples kid — if you know these shows you are probably of my TV generation.

What is scary is that we are socialized on TV and we continue watching it for the rest of our lives… what are we watching? We are predominately watching American culture and values in our Canadian homes. We grow up in a satellite Hollywood that portrays sex and violence all over our television screen.

The sex and violence on television continues to push the line and eventually we will be watching porn on CTV at 9:00pm. Seriously, I find it extremely disturbing the way women are portrayed as sexual objects and men as violent and powerful. This is what kids are watching 900 hours of…

I think it is a good idea to get bunny ears and do something else instead of watch TV. There is so much smut, scandal and violence on TV and after I sit on my couch for an hour, I wonder what did I really get out of that? The other night I was going to have a bite to eat and go do some reading, instead I watched an hour and a half of American Idol. Finally at 10:30 on the commercial I asked myself, “why are you still watching this crap?”

It is such a waste of time and money (well I have bunny ears so not the money part); but my time is very valuable.

Here are a few fun clips for the kids of my TV generation. Enjoy!

Who am I? February 2, 2007

Filed under: TV — mmmchocoloate @ 10:03 am

Well you may think that is a pretty deep question. I have the answer and you all can too! Pick a few of your favorite television shows and watch the commercials in between… that is exactly who the advertisers/programmers think you are.

They direct a show to a specific demographic and on commercials, tell us exactly who we are and what we need in life.

Think about it – soap operas for example – you are probably a woman, who likes gossip and scandal, is at home in the afternoons and probably needs food and cleaning ideas. Just watch the commercials.

So you want to know who you are? Just watch the commercials during your favorite shows and you can figure it out.
